See more Rotten T @RT80537573 Sep 20 I just finished watching this film on DVD, the Criterion Collection edition no less! Why Criterion would waste their resources on this film is beyond me. Although this film is technically well made and the performances are top-notch, there's literally no point to it. Not only that, I was expecting a very disturbing, difficult to watch experience. Thankfully, I can report that it is neither. Yes, there are some uncomfortable moments, but there's nothing here that qualifies as nightmare material. Overall the pacing is surprisingly slow. That works for the buildup, and there is one excruciating long take about 2/3 through the film (excruciating due to it's length, not it's violence because there is none). Speaking of violence, the vast majority of it occurs off screen, which surprised me for a film that is allegedly a horror film that is difficult to watch (or so say many reviewers). Even the one nude scene takes place off screen. It's as though the filmmaker is pre-censoring himself because he is hyper-sensitive to how his film will be perceived. Worst of all, the victims here fall into tired and predictable patterns of behavior all too often seen in derivative horror films. No reasonable person would behave as these characters do at various points of the film, which dilutes the audience's sympathy because we are questioning their rationality under the circumstances. Overall I was expecting something very different: more violent, more psychologically challenging, more emotionally disturbing. I received none of those, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Bottom line: do not put this at the top of your list, and reconsider whether it belongs in your list at all. See more Read all reviews
