I dare say this is one of Freeman's best performances. Is it Unforgiven or Million Dollar Baby? No but he is just as fully engaged, more the part than actor, Freeman is filled with both charm and sincerity, becoming the friend you need on a bad day. The checkout girl (Paz Vega) he is researching for his next role is having one of those bad days and in need of a friend. The two have an easy chemistry between them with Vega capable of stealing a few scenes. There is that unspoken parting when the day is over reminiscent of Lost in Translation and executed just as well. Was it profound? Hard Hitting? A complicated plot with complex characters? No. Albeit the film succeeds where many cannot, at forging connections with the people around us, capturing the mundane and the ordinary without derision and giving a laugh or two, or three or many where other films serve grit for grit's sake. It was described in other reviews as fluff, it isn't that - it is levity and heart which is rarely seen. It was novel because it managed to be lighthearted and kind which is refreshing, a worth see. It's more of a "slice of life" that just leaves you feeling like you had a great day with the two main characters. Morgan Freeman's character is a completely unencumbered free spirit - he has enough money and success not to be bothered by life's struggles. Paz Vega's character is a no-nonsense cashier who is tied to her reality as a grocery store clerk and the comparatively unfulfilling life that surrounds it. She is generally annoyed by her life and Morgan Freeman but still manages to have fun with him as she reluctantly lets him hang around with her for the day. They have great chemistry together, and it makes the movie. Some other notes: Paz Vega is gorgeous in this movie and somehow still manages to believable as a cashier. The soundtrack is also very fun, but it does seem a bit overused and can get a bit annoying towards the end. There are also lots of celebrity cameos which are largely pointless to the plot but give some laughs. So overall they do enhance the experience. See more ronald h @RT44372985 06/13/2021 Essentially plotless, _10 Items or Less_ has kind of a meta quality: Morgan Freeman takes a role in a low budget indie film, just for fun--which is what he actually did here. Since the story is practically nonexistent, it's all about the acting. Freeman plays a famous (and nameless) actor who hasn't made a movie in four years, just because he doesn't want to work. For whatever reason, he has now decided to consider a role in a low budget film in which he will play a grocery store manager. Doing research for the part, he meets Scarlet (Paz Vega), a Hispanic check out clerk in a Los Angeles bodega. They end up hanging out all day, and he accompanies her to a job interview for an office position at a construction company. That's it. There are lots of light comedic moments and lots of dialogue, and the whole thing is kind of sentimental and sappy. Freeman's character is hard to believe. How many mega stars would spend the day with a grocery clerk? And not only that, but enjoy themselves? Nevertheless, Freeman is Freeman. He's a great actor, unfailingly impressive even when he's in a less-than-great movie. Paz holds her own with her monolithic co-star. She's feisty, very natural, and believable. There is a hilarious cameo by Bobby Cannavale, and an unnecessary and pointless cameo by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. I always wonder how much movie stars get paid for 15 seconds of screen time. In spite of its frivolity, I rather liked this insubstantial little 81 minute film. The acting sells it. See more Read all reviews
