Dr. C @drcereal Feb 24 This movie is one of the many films Rotten Tomatoes has cruelly underrated, and it's because critics are afraid of its message. It questions the intellectual basis of an existing form of education that legitimizes the US' economic system. Messages like these read like an active threat to powerful media companies who participate in an economy of that national attitude. The discrepancy between the critics and audience score, including its resurgence today, came to prove the film's point about reevaluating the status quo in both education and media/textual consumption as a whole. Sure, it might have elements that turn it into a run-of-the-mill teen "comedy," but the film's purpose tells a different story, one that doesn't just "live up to its potential" (contrary to the critics consensus), but undermines the need for gauging student and social representation based on merit and potential entirely. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Feb 6 This is one of the very very few movies I've cried to. (I cry much more to songs). It takes a special kind of magic to make me cry, and the fact that a movie like this did it, means there's hope for us all. The reason it resonated with me so much is because after experiencing college for the first time, and THEN watching this... I couldn't help it. But there's one scene in particular that did it for me-- and that was when they were collecting ideas for what to teach. They had a large whiteboard, and they ASKED what they wanted to learn. The students could literally pick what they wanted to learn. No adults to tell them what to do. No adults saying "Oh, you can't do that." "What do you want to learn?" I will never forget this question. I find it deeply philosophical and personal, as it should with everyone. Be whatever you want to be. Learn whatever you want to learn. Because that's what life is all about. And that's what makes life awesome. It knows exactly what it is—a pure, unpretentious comedy—and it executes that perfectly. Don't blame the film for not changing your life or delivering profound revelations; that's not its job. The premise is fun and carries some satirical potential, but the film mostly takes the easy route, relying on quick jokes, absurd situations, and a consistently playful tone. The first part works better, with decent pacing and a few gags that land, but the story eventually stretches beyond its material and starts to feel repetitive. Humor is uneven, often obvious, and clearly aimed at a specific audience. Characters are more functional than developed, and while the film hints at a critique of the education system and academic pressure, it never digs very deep.
