Critics Consensus

Alien³ takes admirable risks with franchise mythology, but far too few pay off in a thinly scripted sequel whose stylish visuals aren't enough to enliven a lack of genuine thrills.

One assumes that Weaver received enough combat pay to compensate for playing the now understandably cynical Ripley in this bleak and pointlessly grueling movie. Go to Full Review

It does succeed in rounding the three movies off, not smashingly but interestingly. It drives us into the wall, throws Ripley into a blind alley from which, at last, there is no escape hatch. Go to Full Review

The monsters just aren't that scary anymore, and so the film mostly just sits there, gloomy and inert, sunk in exhausted myth, looking and sounding Wagnerian but feeling underpowered. Go to Full Review

Alien 3 immediately and completely squanders everything that made its predecessors great. This bold new vision swaps in a drab setting, unlikable characters, and an uninteresting plot that lacks suspense. Go to Full Review

[Alien 3] just doesn’t have the same tension and visceral impact that the first two movies did so well. Go to Full Review

The movie folds back upon its previous incarnations again and again, never attempting to advance its twice-told tale, content merely to retell once more. What's on screen seems aimed more at making money than making myth. Go to Full Review

KEANE O @RT24568460 4d Alien³ (Assembly Cut) is good movie. This movie was have some artistic visual and i like the philosophical theme of nihilismn world. David Fincher talent really shinning in this movie. My only complain of Alien³ was killing off Hicks and Newt (my favorite characters). But overall it's still good movie. Sigourney Weaver talent really shinning in this movie even i can saying it was her very best acting beside Aliens (1986) See more Logan D @Greynomad38 5d As noted, I viewed the "Assembly Cut," a re-edited version of the film which adds 30 minutes of footage. Lemme say, I don't recall the 1992 film that well except in broad strokes so I'm not sure what all was new and what wasn't. This version does add the benefits of giving more of the prisoners distinct personalities and fleshing out the relationship between Ripley and the doctor (played by Charles Dance). While I enjoyed Dance getting room to breathe I thought him sleeping with Ripley was out of character for her. But it suffers from pacing bloat. It's just too long. And with a couple of exceptions the characters aren't as appealing as the first two films. Speaking of Aliens, the original runtime was 137 mins but it never felt like it. I've even viewed the film with extra scenes and thought they added to the film in a positive way. If you've never viewed the original this version would be the way to go. See more Leprechaun K @LeprechaunKing May 18 Alien 3 is grossly underrated. This is Fincher's directorial debut and it is wonderfully executed with solid performances across the board, and the cinematography is nothing short of excellence. It is far from perfection and can't compare to the predecessors, which are unmatched to this day. This 3rd installment has a different tone than Aliens, just like Aliens is very different from the original. Special effects are inconsistent, some are really bad while some are fantastic. The score is also excellent. It does provide a satisfying conclusion to the franchise. Anything that comes afterwards is simply insufficient. See more Priya C. @Sci-FiTrekkie May 13 Alien 3 in my opinion messes up what made the first two films great. It tries to go with a darker storyline and includes a lot of characters that I didn’t feel invested in. This is one of the most disappointing films in the Alien franchise. See more Benjamin W. @Code70 May 3 Unpleasant, grueling, and undoes the success of its predecessor. Alien 3 is competently made. David Fincher is an amazing director, and much of his craft is on display here. But it’s a sequel that undoes the win of Aliens while also being overly grim and nihilistic to the point of just unpleasantness. Unlike the first two, it is not very rewatchable, and I don’t think it ended in a satisfying manner. This film was severely plagued with production trouble, and you can tell. I don’t quite hate this film the way David Fincher does, but I certainly did not enjoy it. See more Lindsey M @verynearlyaperson Apr 25 Too long, too sepia, too slow. Of the two characters I cared about, one was killed early on in the movie. When I type "early on," I mean in what feels like the first 15 of 400 hours. I love most of the other Alien movies but this one puts me to sleep every single time. Lastly, it has some of the worst effects in the franchise but on the upside, they are a break from the sepia stupor. See more Read all reviews
