retro b @retrobite Feb 1 Emmerich’s London is a technical baroque, a saturation of signs attempting to hide creative misery. But there is an involuntary success: it shows how the use-value of the poetic word is devoured by the exchange-value of noble prestige, insulting, almost unknowingly, the luminous vagrancy of writing. They want beauty to be the private property of the aristocracy. Shakespeare, the real one, was a ghost walking the streets; this Oxford in the film is just a dandy with a martyr complex. I was in a theater class at the time. It peaked my interest so I rented it. The acting was exceptional. The concept was intriguing. As to whether or not there is any proof of this concept has left to be, or not to be, proven. But that is the question. I think viewership would be enough to intrigue others to consider picking up some of the Bard’s work, dusting it off and giving it a second view. What I find also to be aggravating is the DEI modifications of his work. Sir Brian Blessed nearly had an aneurysm recently after discovering this in London. To even contemplate DEI edits of Shakespeare is an atrocity. This film on the other hand is about the Bard himself, and a would-be ghost writer, leaving room to the imagination.
