What to Know

Critics Consensus

Benefitting from astonishing Australian locations and Charlize Theron's raw athleticism while skimping on the finer details, Apex doesn't mark the zenith of survival thrillers but makes for a solid entry.

Charlize Theron gives everything she’s got to a survival thriller right out of the cliché spin cycle, but there’s no contest when she pits herself against a raging Mother Nature and Taron Egerton’s psycho cannibal killer. They never had a chance. Go to Full Review

It is thrillingly made -- lean and mean. Go to Full Review

This is a mildly distracting guilty pleasure romp that is undone by its own casting crisis. Go to Full Review

Director Baltasar Kormákur keeps things moving relentlessly through the jungle, ravines and whitewater rapids, the stars are believably well matched and Jeremy Robbins’ screenplay has a couple of nicely gruesome surprises. Go to Full Review

Egerton is clearly having a blast here. It’s fun to see him lean into another chaotic performance.Apex is an interesting title though, considering this film is only in the middle of the food chain of cinema. Go to Full Review

hayley J @RT36193042 3h I found Apex really overhyped for what it was. The film felt like it borrowed heavily from other thrillers without bringing much originality of its own. The crossbow scenes and lack of dialogue instantly reminded me of Hush, while the shape-shifting and switching personalities felt very similar to Split. Instead of feeling inspired by those films, it came across more like a patchwork of ideas we’ve already seen done better elsewhere. I was also confused by parts of the storyline, especially with Ben. One minute he’s in the cave above her head, then suddenly he’s swinging naked from a tree quite a distance away where she has to spot him through binoculars. It felt disjointed and poorly explained, which pulled me out of the tension the film was trying to build. Overall, it had some interesting visuals and moments of suspense, but for me it didn’t live up to the hype and relied too much on ideas from stronger thriller films. BUT--it falls flat in so many places. Only thing interesting were the bodies. See more Cycle C @Begun236 13h Oof! That was one boring movie See more Hadi K. @FadeToBlackX 14h Apex is a tense, visually stunning survival thriller carried by a powerful performance from Charlize Theron and an unsettling turn from Taron Egerton. Director Baltasar Kormákur keeps the suspense tight with breathtaking wilderness cinematography and grounded action, even if the screenplay becomes somewhat predictable in the second half. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it’s gripping, atmospheric, and emotionally solid enough to make for a very worthwhile watch.
