Adam Webber (Brendan Fraser) has lived his entire life in confinement in a fallout shelter in Pasadena, Calif. When the Webber family's rations of food and supplies grow thin, Adam's eccentric father, Calvin (Christopher Walken), sends him on a dangerous restocking mission. When Adam emerges from the Webber family's subterranean refuge for the first time, he finds that rumors of a nuclear apocalypse were totally false -- and meets gorgeous Eve Rustikov (Alicia Silverstone).

Fraser is the sweet, goofy engine that drives this movie. The script doesn't do enough with his reactions to a world that bears little relation to the Cold War planet Adam has been told about, but Fraser still manages to suggest volumes.

This is a really cute movie due to its quirky premise and especially its stellar cast. If you're looking for huge belly laughs or important cinema, keep looking. Otherwise, come along for the ride. This movie doesn't take itself seriously for a moment, equally poking fun at 1962-era morals and politics AND 1999 craziness. Brendan Fraser is absolutely perfect in his role as Adam, and Alicia Silverstone (whatever happened to?) is equally sweet and completely relatable as Eve. Throw in an over-the-top Christoper Walken, and you've got a zany, loveable fish-out-of-water tale. It's more "Brady Bunch movie" than "Back to the Future," but combining paranoia with innocence and today's anything-goes amorality, and you've got a recipe for success.

Solid fish out of water story. For sure not as good as its predecessor Back to the Future, but Walken, Frazier and even Dave Foley are hilarious to watch, and there are some great zingers in there. Yeah, it is super contrived to set up the humor (the cult, time very long timeline, etc), but most of it lands pretty well. Silverstone was decent, but feels slightly off... the weird way she scrunches her face makes me think of Nelly from Little House on the Prairie.

This movie is completely underrated; it's honestly baffling that it received such mixed reviews. The concept and story are cleaver, the cast is great, the acting is wonderful and truly believable (even from bit players); it's funny and sincere - overall it is positively charming. The worst thing of the entire movie was the sound track, it was only mediocre. This is a re-watchable family favorite.
