The film captures the elegance of its setting with beautiful cinematography and strong period detail, creating an immersive atmosphere. The performances are solid, particularly from Matthew Goode and Ben Whishaw, who bring subtle emotion to their roles. However, the story can feel slow at times, and some of the deeper themes don’t fully connect as strongly as they could. While it has moments of genuine emotional weight, the pacing and somewhat distant tone may not appeal to everyone. Overall, it’s a well-made but uneven adaptation that works best for fans of character-driven period dramas, rating it a 6/10. See more Unique C. @uniquecliches Feb 4 The story is probably more interesting than the movie, which feels a bit fragmented and at times not very convincing. Matthew Goode was a strong casting choice; he convincingly captures a very handsome man whose central drive is a deep desire to belong to a family. His character is by far the best developed in the movie. Yet, one would hope it would still develop more over time, rather than remaining largely the same—though admittedly more reflective and less likable as the movie progresses. All the other characters in the movie sort of meander around, with some of them unexpectedly fading out. Ben Whishaw and his character Sebastian is probably the best example of this. The film has great one-liners. Visually, it is captivating. After watching it, I just don't see it. The usual suspects are there, but a completely different dynamic going on here. But as a story by itself, it was okay. It wasn't thrilling, though. It was interesting enough, but it just ended in the middle of nothing. I didn't get a satisfying resolution here. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/03/2022 As gentle period dramas focussing on social/class issues go, this one is perfectly ok, with some good performances and settings. Its not a film I found especially remarkable or memorable but its not utterly uninteresting and I quite liked some of the classical music played and so on. I thought Ben Whishaw gave a particularly good performance and I'd say this is a decent enough Sunday evening type period/costume drama film, set in the 1940s. Its somewhat immersive, if not overly memorable as such but I didn't feel I was entirely bored, which is probably the main thing. I couldn't help but think what 'first world problems' were mentioned during the film - that's a given, of course. It does, however, become somewhat poignant after a while. I should point out that at times characters speak quite quietly (softly spoken) - whispering, just about, so if you have issues hearing then you may find it hard to follow in full, which could be frustrating. Religion is also mentioned, which may or may not bother people. There is some dialogue that I thought was quite good, so overall I would recommend this pleasant enough watch, yes.
