BULL is a revenge thriller like no other. Ferocious, audacious, and blood-soaked, the latest from BAFTA-winning writer/director Paul Andrew Williams stars Neil Maskell as a vicious mob enforcer seeking revenge on the gang that double-crossed him. Ten years after he was last seen, Bull (Maskell) returns home to methodically track down those who betrayed him and find his beloved son. With the ominous warning: "I'm coming for all of them," Bull stalks his former gang, leading up to a savage showdown between his wife and her mob boss father (David Hayman).

What makes it so watchable, even despite the stomach-churning violence, is Williams’s clever, non-chronological narrative, which layers in the suggestion that all riddles will be answered with one closing knockout revelation.

It felt like the filmmaker got 99% done and then decided to drop in a plot device that wraps up the story in a tight little bow. Some call it clever… I call it lazy.

Bull (2023) is an 88-minute-long British suspense I saw on Prime in 2026. SPOILER ALERTS. This violent, vengeance-filled and -fuelled film ends with a plot twist that is best described as a cheap trick or is worst described as a bait-and-switch. Bull reminded me of Brickhead by personality and of David Brent by appearance. There are no good or redeeming characters (with speaking roles) in this film except the child, Aiden. Well, maybe the butcher who is extorted and de-fingered… Perhaps I am being hyperbolic? Any character who is more than a lamp post warrant no sympathy, so the violence seems gratuitous. Which, it is. This could be a false correlation however I have seen enough films where the writer, producer and director are the same person and faults seep through (the key fault for me is that bait-and-switch plot twist ending as well as that Bull exist is a world without police implications at all)… Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 4/10.

Fantastic film. Neil Maskell is always mesmerising. Great support from David Hayman. Tense, atmospheric and Unflinching in its gory violence, but we still root for Maskell’s character. Very similar to Ben Wheatley’s better offerings. Fabulous but definitely not for the squeamish.
