A year after his heroics in L.A., detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) is mixed up in another terrorist plot, this time at Washington Dulles International Airport, where he is waiting for his wife (Bonnie Bedelia). That same night, South American politico and drug profiteer Ramon Esperanza (Franco Nero) is arriving in U.S. custody. McClane takes action when a treasonous ex-colonel (William Sadler) seizes control of the airport, threatening to crash every inbound flight unless Esperanza is freed.

Critics Consensus

It lacks the fresh thrills of its predecessor, but Die Hard 2 still works as an over-the-top -- and reasonably taut -- big-budget sequel, with plenty of set pieces to paper over the plot deficiencies.

Plays it very safe with the plot by copying a lot of what made the first work but sadly the villains of the piece are far, far less interesting. It does have some fun scenes and Bruce Willis is still on fine form so still worth a watch though...

It doesn't have the same magic as its predecessor, but it still has its main factor: Bruce Willis, who keeps you hooked on this plot, which is a bit more generic than the first, but still a great action movie.

Die Hard 2 (1990) is a good sequel that successfully keeps the spirit of the original while shifting the action to a new setting. Moving the chaos from a skyscraper to an airport works surprisingly well, giving the film a different kind of tension and scale without losing the core appeal of John McClane being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The action scenes are well-staged and consistently entertaining, with a steady buildup of suspense as the situation escalates. Bruce Willis once again carries the film with his everyman attitude, balancing sarcasm and determination in a way that makes the character easy to root for. It doesn’t quite reach the tight, iconic brilliance of the first film, and some moments feel a bit more formulaic. Still, it’s a solid, energetic sequel that delivers plenty of action and rewatchable entertainment. I’d rate it a 7/10.
