It tells the story of a woman who always knew what she wanted. She seized every opportunity she had, rising from an illegitimate daughter to the wife of the President. It is a journey from the country to the city; from a social butterfly to a glamorous actress who captures fame with her power, beauty, and charm. I am not familiar with the actual history, but the film portrays her as someone who genuinely benefited the poor and earned their respect. See more Simon T @Bucksplit Jul 5 The biggest problem with Evita is that it has next to no plot. Poor girl sleeps her way to the top, then takes a long time dying. That's it. With music. Lloyd Webber has no off button, so he keeps repeating a handful of Big Tunes, sticks in a key change so he can milk it even more, then hands it to his orchestrator to generate a Latin-American vibe. He's lucky here to have Alan Parker inject some grit and genuine beauty, although even he can't rescue a moribund second half. The good: production values and songs. The bad: Madonna, Madonna, Madonna. For everyone saying "It's her best acting performance" . . . that's a pretty low bar, no?
