Elise Mar 7 Genuinely very interesting film. Had a hard time orienting myself for the first 20 minutes, but it locked me in. Kubrick is a very particular filmmaker and not to everyone's taste. This work is about a man with presumptions around marriage, sex, sexuality, and gender who's cut down at the knees by a revelation from his wife, causing a spiraling journey through one night across New York. I forget sometimes how masterful Kubrick is at creating sequences with such gravity and precision that you're totally sucked in and along for the ride. For a film exploring deep human emotions like love, envy and desire, it’s a very cold and non-engaging storyline. Kubrick films were often like this, so I’m not sure he was the best person to tackle this kind of subject matter. Ang Lee would have been a better choice. The pacing didn’t bother me as much as the lack of real depth, the often-clunky dialogue and the hilarious attempts at trying to make London look like New York did. The much-hyped orgy scene feels curiously sterile but the cinematography and set design are, as you’d expect, something to behold. It feels like a film people praise because of who made it rather than its content. I’m sure many will argue about subtextual layers and profound symbolism, as is often the case with auteur directors, but for me it was a good film striving for greatness but never quite getting there.
