Lariste L Oct 4 Well made documentary! Much like the situation in Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, there's a certain kind of American businessperson that's essentially just a scam artist, but highly ambitious and ultimately charged and jailed. The Fyre documentary is also about vacuous "influencer" and festival culture. While a few legit celebs are "on board" with the launch of Fyre, the story mostly focuses on the rather slimy, rather anonymous and very "big thinking" scam artist Billy McFarland, who plans to launch a money-spinning booking app by having an "Elite Music Festival" in the Bahamas. Supposedly high traffic influencers, celebrities, music industry types and, um, rich kids (mostly) were expected to hand over literally millions to attend a squalid, flat campsite thrown together by (unpaid) labor. The festival that eventuates looks more like a humanitarian aid camp of some sort, although there's some great local scenery and a few nice beachside venues to visit. The botched "Luxury Festival" ends up being several notches lower than the cheapest backpacker holiday, except with a clunky stage blasting DJ noise, various bands cancelling last minute also. What's interesting about the film is that it appears to be a catastrophe of poor planning, but is actually more just common wire fraud. So-called "businessman" Billy McFarland has a nasty history of fake accounting, fake claims, fake promises etc. Worth seeing! There's an element of amusement watching the ridiculously overpriced festival collapse, and pathos as various staffers and planners lose money by the bucketload. See more THE NASHVILLE I @Nshvlleindie Jun 11 Not necessarily untruthful, but Fyre's production by the ad company that helped make Fyre fest to begin with, makes this documentary somewhat problematic. While Huly got the jump on Netflix by getting direct sources (such as the founder) on record, Netflix basically had to go the other way and spike the entertinment factor. Therefore it feels somewhat forced at times, but it's still a decent documentary. See more David W 11/10/2023 Fyre offers an entertaining and intriguing look into one of the 2010s' most notorious events. As a film, Fyre is engrossing. As a documentary, it elevates awareness of the event and brings the personal cost to normal, working class vendors and influencers to light. I would definitely watch this again. Well, you didn't already know that answers, after watching this film you'll know that social media is FULL of fake personalities pulling in gullible dupes. "Fire" presents a fascinating behind the scenes look at the creation, selling, and rollout of the infamous Fyre music festival. The audience knows from the start of the impending disaster, but it is an absolute train wreck you can't turn away from. There are pretty much red flags everywhere it was not going to end well and that it was all smoke and mirrors. What was being sold to on social media to trick "influencers" and other dupes into buying expensive tickets for the sham festival showed a completely different reality. That's the subtext of the film, the phoniness of social media and its vapid "influencers." Overall, this is a fun Netflix documentary from Chris Smith, the director of "American Movie" (a must see if you haven't seen it) and producer of "Tiger King," that is well worth checking out.
