Takashi Shimizu telegraphs scares to the point of numbness. Peek under a table? There's the boy! The room a bit too quiet, is it? It's the girl! All that's frightening are the actors' pained facial expressions, suggesting an epidemic of farty indigestion.

It’s that bad, folks. And I’m limited to 1,000 characters. The Grudge 2 was one of the worst films released in 2006. Its failure stems from one-dimensional characters you cannot root for, scattered storytelling, a lack of scares, an overly similar plot to the original, a poor backstory, and a confusing transition of events. What made the Japanese version so successful was the focus on suspense and horror; we do not get that in this film. Plus, the final girl we all rooted for in the last film, Karen Davis (Sarah Michelle Gellar), is barely in the film and gets no proper send-off. Instead, her send-off is replaced by stale one-dimensional mean girls, a family in Chicago with one having change issues, and Karen's sister, Aubrey, who may mean well but lacks the strength and compelling character traits that her late sister possessed. If you do watch this movie, be sure to watch it for free on Tubi. Do not recommend.
