The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

The trouble is this proper hero worship is drawn out and overstated in a bloated film that could lose 20 minutes of first-act exposition and 15 minutes of battle scene redundancies from its 131 minutes.

The superbly shot battle scenes aside, Gibson’s traditionalist sensibilities show up in how he shoots everything else which is a perfect fit for this particular film. It’s easy to get lost in the period he visualizes.

Not for the faint of heart but through moving, impactful storytelling and character development that gives you an underdog to really root for, this is a story that will stick with you for a very long time.

This was a wonderful depiction of immense courage in the face of adversity--one of the most intensely moving films we've ever seen. My father was a Marine veteran of Okinawa and I personally really appreciate the research that went into making this great movie. He never shared much of his story with me while he was alive, and though my father didn't see combat in the battle depicted, this movie gave me many insights into what he saw when he was only 20 years old. There were many times during the movie that i was moved to the point of tears, and overall this was an emotionally gripping but yet still entertaining depiction of the horrors of war and the reality faced at Okinawa.

In Hacksaw Ridge, for example, the American battle over Okinawa is formed as a feasting ground of brutality and barbarity which juxtaposes beauty against chaos on the battlefield through sheer realism and vast cinematography. Inherent Vice immerses viewers in a raw cinematic aesthetic marked by muted colors, dynamic camera movement, and extreme close-ups of anguished faces, increasing the emotional tension. It portrays war through its scintillating visual and sound design in a depiction both terrifying and artistically evocative of hell. Overall it is one of my favorite films.

Great movie. Doesn't shy away from the blood and depicts war more accurately and than most movies in my opinion. Shows the horrors Doss had to go through in real life. One of the few movies based on a real war hero that does them justice in my opinion
