Critics Consensus

Rob Zombie doesn't bring many new ideas to the table in Halloween, making it another bloody disappointment for fans of the franchise.

Because it's still about Michael Myers, it all feels epic and larger than life in a way few of those other films do. Go to Full Review

The result, though undeniably preferable to yet another misbegotten installment of the long-exhausted franchise, certainly doesn't compare to John Carpenter's landmark original film. Go to Full Review

Taking 50 minutes to get to the present where the original took five, here we are offered something resembling justification for why poor little Mikey beat and stabbed his way to infamy. Go to Full Review

Leans into the least interesting elements of the original storyline while also being held back by Rob Zombie's emphasis on style over substance. Go to Full Review

[Zombie] demystifies everything Carpenter’s film made legendary in the most banal ways. Go to Full Review

It may not be the standout Zombie was hoping for, but Halloween finds its own brutal identity along the way while still honoring the original it is based on. Go to Full Review

Alex D. @RT24918759 1d The beginning is the wost but the second half is great and Michael’s mask looks so cool See more Eric D @RT71988539 6d If this is your first introduction to Myers you’ll love it I connected to it heavily because of his back story leading up to to why he became the shape See more Steven fc T @RT97215757 May 18 I really enjoyed Rob Zombie’s Halloween, especially because of the story and this version of Michael Myers, who feels brutal, disturbing and much more human compared to other movies in the franchise. The movie flows smoothly without ever becoming boring and keeps a dark, uncomfortable atmosphere throughout. Rob Zombie manages to give the remake its own identity while still keeping the spirit of Halloween alive. See more C P. @NakedBuddha May 11 This is one of the best in the series. See more Charles T. @CharlesGaming1000 Apr 20 Very solid remake! my complaint is the ridiculous nudity See more Axel R. @Axellent33 Mar 15 While purists cling to the 1978 original like a sacred text, Rob Zombie’s remix is a necessary evolution, a masterclass in taking a classic track and adding the grit it always lacked. The first act is a tragic, human descent. Unlike the original, where parents react to a child murderer like mannequins, Zombie gives us the "why." By showing the "white trash" dysfunction, the bullying, and the mental decay in the sanitarium, he anchors the horror in reality. Being evil doesn't make you "not human." Tyler Mane is the definitive Michael Myers. He is an imposing, freakish force of nature who actually stalks his prey instead of magically knowing how to drive. The first time he meets Laurie, he shows her a picture of them as children, showing there was still a flicker of good in him. When she rejects and stabs him, she isn't just defending herself; she’s murdering the last bit of "Young Michael" left. That is Shakespearean-level tragedy. Zombie had the guts to make Michael human.
