Critics Consensus

A classic haunted house story enriched with atmospheric folklore and perfectly-timed shocks, Hokum further solidifies writer-director Damian McCarthy as a modern master of horror.

Audience Says

Adam Scott plays the perfect detestable prick in Hokum, a gripping, atmospheric folk-horror that trades a bit of pacing for some truly effective jump scares.

Hokum does exactly what it intends to do, stirring up a suffocating miasma of terror and nerves. Go to Full Review

The story sometimes wavers between the hard-to-follow and the nonsensical. But it is never less than creepy, and dread (the most underrated ingredient in horror) suffuses the film. Go to Full Review

The film is efficiently tense, despite some clunky exposition, and delivers a handful of highly effective jump scares. Go to Full Review

While this horror movie is a little short on story and scares, it makes up for those drawbacks with Scott's caustic performance and an irresistible Ireland Halloween haunted-hotel atmosphere. Go to Full Review

Don’t believe the ironic title. The layered Gothic chiller is a very human story. Go to Full Review

derrick 1d Excellent film! Unlike Obsession, this movie had suspense, adventure and incorporated great horror elements in 2026! Neon did it again! See more Brent C 1d pretty good. If you liked 1408, then you'll enjoy this one. See more knox 2d Bring back 'witches' in horror! so much fun. main character felt a bit underdeveloped and the villian seemed to be 'evil for the sake of evil' which is as one-note as it gets. Side characters, despite their lack of material, were my favorite part Their actors gave great performances. See more Bob I 2d A first rate ghost story. See more Jim C 2d Damian McCarthy continues to wow. I typically do love these types of horror. However the balance is incredible. The exploration of grief blew me away. Adam Scott continues to be one of the interesting actors of our time. See more Jordy O 3d Haven’t seen a horror film that actually got me frightened on my seat but this exceeded expectations! Loved every second. A+ See more Read all reviews
