JOHN LENNON: THE LAST INTERVIEW captures an extraordinary and intimate moment in music history -- the final in-depth conversation John Lennon ever gave. On December 8, 1980, Lennon and Yoko Ono sat down with a small radio crew in their New York apartment to promote the release of their album Double Fantasy. What followed was an unfiltered, wide-ranging discussion about music, politics, fatherhood, and life. Just hours later, Lennon was killed. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the documentary presents the nearly complete interview for the first time, framed by reflections from those who were present, revealing a man at the height of his creative and personal powers, openly looking toward the future he would never see.

The result is a film with many revealing moments, despite the struggle to make visual entertainment out of an audio interview. While there’s terrific archive photography of John and Yoko, a few AI generated sequences look out of place. Go to Full Review

Ironically, or not, the very tools Soderbergh has used to make the film distinctive ultimately render it indistinct and unmemorable. Go to Full Review

Plenty of crass, fake, brain-fogging imagery, with that telltale plasticky sheen, has been deployed in this flatly unnecessary documentary, because no one filmed Lennon’s final interview. Go to Full Review

A minor work in the canon of both Soderbergh and John/Yoko, but it’s a niche wellspring of hyper-detailed information for Beatles purists. Go to Full Review

The archive material and new interviews are uplifting and poignant – everything else is a waste of time Go to Full Review

John Lennon: The Last Interview is not revelatory if you already know this interview well. But it’s revealing if you don’t, and it’s never less than respectful and refreshing – even with the creepy digital imagery. Go to Full Review
