While many reviewers' praise is somewhat muted, I think this is a very good movie by Almodovar and well worth watching. The acting, the score, and the brightly colorful costumes and sets are well worth seeing. Emma Suarez (mature Julieta Arcos) and Adriana Ugarte (young Julieta Arcos) feature in the film, among others. The film follows Julieta, a middle-aged woman living in Madrid, who one day runs into an old friend of his daughter who informs her that her estranged daughter, whom Julieta hasn't seen in 13 years, is living in Switzerland with her three children. Julieta was ready to leave Madrid for Portugal with her lover, but she decides to stay back in case her daughter reaches her, knowing that her mother is still in Madrid. Pedro understands how to entice the viewers to his basic stories in his film and keep them glued. Pedro's films are not jam-packed with action, spectacular effects, and terror, yet they keep you captivated to the screen throughout. The movie focuses mostly on how some families are built and destroyed. The film does not feature an adult daughter who is off-screen. Men are represented to be cheaters and full of adultery, or submissive, whilst women and girls are shown to be in charge of events that ruin or rebuild families. Julieta had sex with a complete stranger on the train without knowing who he is, if he is married. However, she objects to her father having extramarital affairs with the assistance at home. She asks her father about who is caring for her when she herself spends time away from her parents, rather than caring for her ailing mother. Such perverted values and society of the West are beyond explanation, yet you can let it go. See more Ben D @RT87620530 09/18/2024 Julieta contains a story that didn’t develop emotionally in any conceivable way. While many of the characters are lovely to look at, the lack of a connection made me not really care what happened to them. Xoan (Daniel Grao) has intermittent dalliances with a mutual friend, Ava (Inma Cuesta), the news of which we learn right before he dies removing the gravitas from the moment. Julieta comes in two forms: young (20s, Adriana Ugarte) and older (40s(?) Emma Suárez). When we first meet the younger Julieta, she has an abysmal hairstyle that is so distracting it made me want to fast-forward to more recent memories — we see all of younger Julieta through flashbacks. It’s not a disjointed timeline, but it’s not enjoyable either. Julieta is dejected from her estranged relationship with her daughter, Antia (Sara Jiménez/Priscilla Delgado/Blanca Parés). It’s so unbelievably cruel of Antia to ignore her mother in this capacity, especially since her mother was the victim of the affair, not the perpetrator, that you just want Julieta to not bother with the deadbeat. However, I understand this is much easier said than done, and can see why Julieta would pause her own happiness and a new start in Portugal to remain in Madrid with the hopes of finally reconnecting with her daughter. Fine. But the payoff never comes despite the happy ending. I plan to view all of Almodóvar’s movies in my life, as he is the director for my favorite country, but despite the beauty of its characters and setting — that house on the water up in Galicia truly is something from my Zillow-scouring dreams — Julieta is not a movie I could recommend unless you just need to see Emma Suárez on-screen, which would be understandable See more Zackary T @RT53613456 05/28/2024 Love me some Pedro Almodóvar and this is a beautiful and brilliantly executed addition to his filmography. Dialoghi non particolarmente interessanti ed interpretazioni che lasciano a desiderare rendono abbastanza pesante e vicino alla soap opera alcuni passaggi; senza mai appassionare veramente seppure senza mai perdere di eleganza. La sceneggiatura invece è piuttosto buona, senza grandi sequenze imponenti riesce a far vivere piuttosto bene gli eventi importanti di una vita qualunque; seppure con qualche forzatura non indifferente. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/03/2022 This is a typically stylish and colourful (visibly colourful) film by Pedro Almodovar. It has a pretty decent sense of mystery about it, although I admit I;m not sure I followed every plot detail. It features decent characterisation and will likely keep people guessing, in terms of what the eventual outcome will be. There is a certain sadness to it, in parts. This is a film you need to concentrate on to fully follow the ins and outs and its certainly an intriguing watch. Not a bad film, not quite what I'd consider excellent but certainly good enough to be worth a watch, I'd recommend this film. See more Read all reviews
