After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

It's just so soaringly monotonous... And although hard-core fans will love this whatever, and good luck to them, I'd rather set fire to my own hair than ever have to sit through it again. It would be over quicker, at least.

Les Misérables is a good epic film that succeeds through its emotional storytelling and grand presentation. The movie feels large in scale, yet it still keeps its focus on personal struggles and human emotion, which helps make the story engaging. The performances are passionate and committed, with the cast bringing a lot of intensity to both the dramatic and musical moments. Even when the film becomes very theatrical, the emotional sincerity keeps it grounded enough to stay invested. Visually, the film looks impressive, with strong production design and cinematography that capture the atmosphere of the era. The music is also a major strength, giving many scenes a powerful emotional impact that carries throughout the movie. Overall, Les Misérables is an effective and emotional epic that delivers memorable performances and strong musical storytelling. While some pacing choices may not work for everyone, it is still a well-crafted adaptation that I would rate a 7/10.
