Critics Consensus

Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed.

But ultimately it's [Bruce] Willis who makes this loopy action movie so endearing...Nobody dies it better. Go to Full Review

Though it's mostly entertaining (if overlong), there is a sense that the whole thing has become somewhat rote. Go to Full Review

Even though NYPD Det. John McClane doesn’t always feel like the McClane we know and love, director Len Wiseman does such a wonderful job orchestrating bravado shootouts, fights, and chases that our most basic entertainment needs are met. Go to Full Review

This worthy addition to the Die Hard franchise sticks to a refreshingly old-fashioned (but no less effective) action formula throughout. Go to Full Review

Karen P @Skywalker Dec 28 Great action but doesn’t feel like a Die Hard film at all, i love that they’re trying to add a bit of change to the franchise but it doesn’t feel like it is set in that setting they said it like once in the movie and that’s your whole way of knowing that it’s set on Independence Day. Next to that great movie but the hacker thing quickly gets repetetive and boring, the opening scene was amazing and that’s where i draw my line on the whole hacker plot, Matt has nothing to do the entire movie next to one thing which wasn’t even that nessecary in the first place See more Alfie M Dec 28 It really fucking makes me agitated when I learned the Greatest action director of all time, John Woo could have directed this. It would have had the same futuristic vibe as Face/Off. Instead we get 2 hours of hacker bullshit that gets repetitive fast and makes the film feel twice as long.. Don't get me wrong I really liked the intro, but it gets to stale, generic and boring quick. Another annoying thing is this film is meant to resolve around a great American holiday, Independence Day and you know you your told, not really at all. Should've leaned into the terrorist side WAY more because I actually respect if for trying something different. Brice Willis is actually entertaining and he has some funny moments "what is he, a hamster?" Stuff like this make me giggle. Justin Long doesn't do much, but there's nothing much to really do for him. However I enjoyed this slightly more than Die Hard 3, this felt more purposely dumb. Which I can respect. See more gerald h Dec 25 Let‘s put it this way: it is an ok Bruce Willis movie, but it is NOT a Die Hard movie. See more Michael A @Tomato547 Dec 21 4.0 was easily the worst of the franchise though to be fair I haven't watched 5. Mclane was felt more like a superhero other than a really buffed out cop. And also that bit where he's fighting the lady, I don't think John Mclane's gonna get beat up by an average skinny woman. (No offense to woman) and Bruce Willis was a bit too old for this movie though he did his best. John Mclane just feels old and depressed at that point. It lacked what 1,2 and vengeance did well. But even though it's a crap movie, if you like 1,2 and 3 it's worth watching. See more Jason W Dec 14 Definitely well below the first 3 installments but a decent action film. See more Craig W. @CJWolfe27 Sep 23 Not as good as the first three but still a great action movie See more Read all reviews
