What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Jaafar Jackson's smooth moves bring the King of Pop to uncanny life, this musical biopic mostly plays like a "greatest hits" album that could've benefitted from including liner notes to give actual insight into the icon.

A hokey, corny, safe, clichéd, sanitized look at Michael Jackson. Go to Full Review

“Michael” might be a self-evident, self-sustaining, self-indulgent piece of PR. But layer a catchy tune over all that artifice, and the music is the only thing many people will hear. Go to Full Review

The film is so chopped and screwed that my heart beat fewer times than the number of cuts in a single scene. Go to Full Review

"Michael," however, isn’t the film you thought you were getting. Like "Elvis" and "Back to Black," it rewrites history in a way that only embraces the good. Go to Full Review

It is a celebration of one of the greatest entertainers, showmen, musicians and best-selling artists of all time, a fitting tribute charting the rise from the most humble beginnings to the attainment of legendary status. Go to Full Review

There is no interior to this version of this man. The facade is all that Michael can offer in a sympathetic biopic that shoots to that first star to the right and continues straight on until we are all mourning the honest portrayal that could have been. Go to Full Review

Jill C 17m It was an amazing movie and I heard that they are making a 2nd and 3rd one! See more VALERIE 34m THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT See more Elizabeth 37m Enjoyed the music, dancing and story. See more Nancy T 43m A great movie and so entertaining! Reminded me why I loved MJ and his music growing up. Highly recommend for the family. See more Michelle 45m I grew up with Michael Jackson. Not just the music the era. The anticipation of a new music video. Trying to learn the dance moves in the living room. The absolute chokehold Thriller had on an entire generation. And my mom took my brothers and me to The Victory Tour when it came through Jacksonville so this movie hit differently for me. Theres memory attached to it. Nostalgia. Emotion. A million little pieces of childhood wrapped up in those songs and performances. Which is why I went down the rabbit hole afterward wanting to know what parts were actually Michael and what was Jaafar Jackson (his real life nephew) because there were moments that genuinely blurred together in my brain. The dancing alone is staggering. Not impersonation-level good transformational good. The precision, the timing, the physical control, the posture, the tiny shoulder movements, the way he turns his head, the walk, the hand gestures even the stillness somehow felt like Michael. Not caricature Michael. HUMAN Michael. But what really got me were the subtle things. The soft speaking voice. The shyness. The smile. That little flash of warmth Michael had before slipping right back into being guarded. There were moments where Jaafar wasnt playing Michael Jackson anymore - he disappeared into him. And once you realize how much of that was actually Jaafar and not digital trickery or recycled footage? It becomes even more impressive. The performance starts feeling less like stunt casting and more like a legitimate acting achievement. Ill be shocked if there isnt serious Oscar buzz around this performance because this wasnt somebody doing a Vegas imitation of a global icon. This was somebody carrying the weight of one of the most recognizable human beings in modern history and somehow making you forget you were watching an actor. Nia Long was fabulous. Longtime fan and she brought so much warmth and humanity to Katherine Jackson. Coleman Domingo let me correct myself because my initial reaction was I hated him. What I actually hated was Joe Jackson. Which means Coleman Domingo did exactly what he was supposed to do. He was phenomenal and deeply uncomfortable to watch at times. Probably another Oscar nom here in this performance. Miles Teller was also excellent as John Branca. Every scene he walked into immediately had tension and focus. He played the role with this calm, steady energy that balanced out the chaos surrounding Michael. And yes that was absolutely Mike Myers dressed up as CBS Records executive Walter Yetnikoff. Apparently his cameo in the Queen movie wasnt enough. Overall, superbly done. Visually stunning, emotional as hell and Jaafar Jackson has a massive future ahead of him.
