Despite its predictable graph, the film stays watchable, essentially because of Mrs Ratcliffe's doughty act: [Catherine] Tate sets her jaw and grabs the bit and goes at it. Go to Full Review

Lively and colourful, and also a little contrived. But it features a strikingly engaging performance from Tate. Go to Full Review

Par H @Parhwy 17h Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution (2007) is a 103-minute-long British comedy I saw on Prime in March 2026. The initial stages of this film are two montages put side by side to introduce the characters in England and then as they acclimatise to East Germany. From those two montages the plot begins. The comedy is light. I will go out on a limb and say that this film is somewhat of a Wizard of Oz reimagining: Mrs Ratcliffe is named Dorothy, they get to see behind the Iron Curtain, they escape the Wizard of Oz (East Germans were called Ossi) in a balloon (Dorothy was meant to escape Oz in a balloon). I rest my case. Like a lot of comedies, the last third is a mad dash to tie off all the plot loops into a pretty bow for a happy ending. We get there. Just. Rewatch? Maybe. Recommend? Yes. 5/10. See more James H @RT63835098 Feb 21 Mildly entertaining. Brittany Ashworth is a knock-out. See more acsdoug D @acsdoug 03/20/2024 It had some rather humorous moments, as well as some telling comments about communism, but the last part of the movie turns into an unrealistic farce. See more root @RT93288512 07/03/2023 An underrated comedy gem. I'd love to see this get a wider release on streaming services. Catherine Tate is simply incredible here as both a comedic and dramatic actress. See more 07/02/2012 Funny satire of life in communist areas from a hilarious viewpoint. Rightfully so, it also has its rather serious moments. See more 11/04/2011 Littered with absurd historic inaccuracies this is a banal and only occasionally funny movie that rambled along without much of a story or purpose. Watchable and forgettable...
