The beginning of the movie started strong and had potential then the middle of the movie fell flat and the story felt more like filler rather than intentional. I understand this is classified as a musical but to have a song every other breath is redundant and annoying. Animation CG was amazing but is irrelevant if the story isn’t felt. Kid friendly but pointless to show them unless you want to just kill time. It tries to get through entire sequences with absolutely no story other than swirling colours and 'oooh magic' to the point that obstacles are entirely arbritrary and the story pointless. It starts out strong, with an interesting premise and full of Chinese culture and mythology. However, as the movie progresses it starts to lose any cultural aspects and focuses instead on creating as many colorful, showy blobs for little kids to "ooo" and "aaah" at as it can. The jokes aren't funny. The plot is cliche. It also had a message that was so infuriating that I wanted to turn it off halfway through. **Slight Spoiler** The theme of the movie is about moving on from loved ones that are dead/gone. It did NOT do a good job of handling this complicated topic and honestly, the movie gave me no reason not to think that the dad is wrong for even wanting to move on at all. See more Read all reviews
