I am about halfway through, right when Papillion is let out of solitary. OH MAN... this film is tremendous. I didn't realize Steve McQueen had such range. Prison movies are special in my mind. Man's inhumanity to man is on full display. I just finished the film! OK, so there is a point where I feel like they could have made a really great life for themselves on the island. It totally calls into question the need to escape. To say they aren't "free" when they can do whatever they want... I don't know, I suppose it's all in how you look at it. Being happy where you are versus needing to seek some ideal life. Where did he go? Was it really better than where he was? So great! This film is so, so very great. Spectacular. Perfect. Watch it. See more john h @RT11274104 Jun 4 One of those long two-and-a-half-hour great films that are great because of their time, providing much accumulation for character emphasis, rich storytelling and making the audience feel drowned and "in" the movie. Papillon is filled with shocking surprises and mouth-covering, thrilling prison scenes that capture the attention of viewers during the brilliant performances by Hoffman and McQueen that represent the insanity that follows one after prison. M @RT91944882 May 3 Despite the pacing being inconsistent and taking quite a toll here and there, Papillon still remains a deep, inspiring and emotional prison drama mixed with adventure, with immaculate acting by it's stars and a great soundtrack. See more David H @RT66088367 03/16/2025 This is an excellent film and in my opinion one of the better ones from the 1970s which apart from the Godfather series featured some very mediocre films such as the award winning Rocky. I find today's reviewers to be narrow, pinched by a cynicism that is not a substitute for insight or sophistication.
