Two women, Janis and Ana, coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn't regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way.

I was both fairly sure what Parallel Mothers might be, and eager to be surprised. Thankfully, Almodóvar delivers on both fronts – as Almodóvar should almost always be entrusted to do.

Whatever the case, this is bravura film-making, as Almodóvar brings humour and humanity to a story which in less assured hands, could easily have played like a corny soap opera.

Like several of Almodóvar's mother melodramas, Parallel Mothers oscillates between the “bad mother” and the “good mother.” The symbolic parallels constantly, redefine the narrative, linking the themes of the violation of human rights and identity.

This suspenseful 2-hour film by Pedro Almodvar held my attention the entire time. It artfully tied together a sordid period of Spanish history with the contemporary use of DNA to solve both crimes and questions of paternity. As one who has deciphered complex genealogical issues using both autosomal and Y-DNA, I found this movie to be both interesting and compelling.

One of the least intense Almodovar movies I've seen, but still has many of the hallmarks. Definitely appreciated the historical / political elements included, as the topic of memory is not always explored with such emotional depth
