Critics Consensus

Pyewacket builds its atmospheric, patiently encroaching chills on a well-told story concerned more with emotional trauma than supernatural threats.

The director is out for blood, and while this is a slow-burn affair that craftily bides its time until just the proper moment to unleash a flurry of dexterously ominous thrills, the craven wickedness of it all is portentously intoxicating. Go to Full Review

It's the rare horror film that's actually more effective in psychological terms than in suspense ones. Go to Full Review

As a psychodrama about a troubled mother and daughter, this movie is gripping from start to finish. Go to Full Review

Aside from the issues, I did enjoy the Pyewacket. It had a nice found footage feel without actually being found footage. Would I watch it again? I’m not sure but I definitely recommend giving this movie at least a once over. Go to Full Review

It actually takes itself very seriously... I felt the terror between the characters and the teen. Go to Full Review

Thomas S. @RT61819216 May 10 Good movie. Definitely a slower burn, but about halfway through it picks up. Maybe could have used less high school time in the first half because it didn’t really serve much, and slowed it down a bit too much. But halfway through the movie I started having a lot more fun, really kept me guessing what was real or not, with some fun visuals and a very creepy environment. Very good open endjng. See more Oscar E. @oscarpac May 6 Slow slow slow movie. But the ending was crazy! Besides that it was just alright. See more Todor Y @Phantom961 Apr 24 Boring at times, but it's okay. See more Patrick H @RT16645641 Nov 24 The supernatural is a horror film staple these days, making originality ever more necessary if you wish to scare your audience. Pyewacket meets this demand. It tells the story of Leah, a teenager who has developed an interest in the occult following the death of her father. Her relationship with her mother has broken down and after a vicious argument, Leah puts her knowledge to use, summons the demon Pyewacket and sets it upon her. The film relies mostly upon its oppressive atmosphere. The demon itself is rarely glimpsed and the focus is more upon the increasing distress of Leah, as her anger turns to guilt and then into terror. Every location feels dead and airless, most notably the lonely house and woodlands Leah and her mother move to for a fresh start (against Leah’s wishes). Even when extras are present, such as in school or local shops, they are merely background presences, distant from the central drama. Writer-director Adam Macdonald makes good use of outdoor tracking shots vaguely reminiscent of The Evil Dead. But instead of the malevolent swiftness used by that film, a creeping pace is put to wonderfully ominous effect. Nicole Munoz also gives a terrific performance as Leah, moving deftly through anguish, anger, regret and helpless terror. Pyewacket can apparently take the form of phantom text messages, which pushes credibility a little far, though this can easily be ignored. A smart and chilling horror film that understands the importance of atmosphere over sensation and an engaging, character-driven story at its core. See more Al P @BoosterAp Nov 21 Very slow burner. The thing at the end was creepy. But dont think ill be watching it again. Changed my review because of the bad ending. See more Luigi L @RT41368293 Aug 12 A worried mother following the untimely death of her husband. A restless teenage daughter. The grief, still fresh, and the strained relationship between them: these elements spark a rebellion in the young Leah that translates into an unhealthy passion for the occult. This drives her to summon an evil spirit to kill the woman. A suggestion that a fragile mind, weakened by events and age, can make real. MacDonald confirms her talent for using the camera and her ability to exploit environmental factors. But she needs to refine her writing, which is still a bit flat here. See more Read all reviews
