Critics Consensus

A frightening tale of Satanism and pregnancy that is even more disturbing than it sounds thanks to convincing and committed performances by Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon.

... A claustrophobic horror that taps brilliantly into the uncertainties and queasy potential threats of childbirth. Go to Full Review

The fault ultimately is in the Polanski screenplay which overlooks character for effect, disastrously. Involvement is absent; all is surface and it is a smooth one, without the shimmer of the evil that is within. Go to Full Review

Right to its bitter end, there is no escaping "Rosemary's Baby." On film Ira Levin's best selling novel is as horribly frightening as it was on paper. Go to Full Review

Rosemary’s Baby takes the little flap of cuticle and peels it all the way up to the elbow. It was clearly the inspiration for many movies and moviemakers since. While watching this, I kept drawing parallels with Hereditary. Go to Full Review

Michael M Oct 31 7th time seeing this masterpiece! Highly recommend this if you like psychological horror/thriller. See more marie m 10/03/2022 Still scary after all these years. Mia Farrow's acting was superb!!! See more gungi T @WhatWhere May 18 Rosemary’s Baby deals with a pregnant woman’s slow descent into madness and critically scrutinizes the persistent external forces that cultivate an atmosphere of isolation and coercion. The eerie occurrences involving cultish and demonic conspiracies contribute to Rosemary’s paranoid state of mind, further intensified by the neighbours’ overwhelming presence, her husband’s whimsical yet controlling behavior, and finally the doctor’s questionable authority over her body. The film shares aspects of what Charlotte Gilman had already portrayed in the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, including the coercive apparatus of the male-dominated medical world, patriarchal structures that enable control over the "hysterical" woman, and the gothic delirium into schizophrenia. While the film showcases a great deal of psychological insight into the nervous and angsty isolation with which the protagonist struggles, the time it takes to tell the story ultimately feels overly prolonged See more Marti M @Goodmom4 May 17 I was 11 when this movie came out, and never get tired of it. Ruth Gordon won the Best Supporting Actress for her role, rightfully deserved. See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly May 17 I have watched this movie a handful of times over the years, and I remember not being impressed during my first viewing. Rosemary's Baby is one of those movies that I appreciate a bit more with each repeated viewing. I should get to reading the original book written by Ira Levin, because I hope it will offer unique insight into the story and a different perspective on the movie itself. See more Darja S @darjasuri May 13 A classic that holds up — but I'll be honest, I wanted to see the baby. Just a tail, some horns, anything. The atmosphere is immaculate, and watching Rosemary gaslight herself in real time is more disturbing than any supernatural element. Polanski understood restraint. I just wished he'd broken it once.
