What to Know

Critics Consensus

An old-fashioned spookfest, this Salem's Lot won't be the definitive adaptation of Stephen King's famed vampire tale but it makes for a passable reintroduction to a new generation.

As a stab at making vampires physically and spiritually threatening again after a run of fictions more sympathetic to their outsider status, Salem’s Lot is intermittently effective. Go to Full Review

By no means the disaster many might have expected following its years-long delay. You’ll like it. Not a lot, but you’ll like it. Go to Full Review

Despite all of its promise, Salem’s Lot is a shell of King’s acclaimed novel, encapsulating none of the terror or devastation of the vampire tale and instead falling flat on every level. Go to Full Review

Dauberman retains the book's 1970s milieu yet does little to flesh out the characters or build any palpable tension before revealing the chilling evil about to suck the life from the community. Go to Full Review

Richard W @RT65767935 1h It wasnt really that bad ,but not as good as the earlier version, the score on rotten tomatoes is about correct ,couple of scary scenes ,but overall it is what it is ,more of a b horror movie See more Tj T @RT41223473 2d The vampires felt more like zombies, lacking intelligence. Even the head vampire decisions made no sense and we never even get a full understanding on what the vampires were even trying to accomplish. The story would’ve been so much better if when they turned into vampires, they kept their personalities, but we’re corrupt instead, we get mindless vampires that stand in the sunlight Even the head vampire was supposed to be this ancient being. At the end of the movie he’s in a coffin in a drive-through movie theater in the wide open. Why doesn’t he go back to the original castle or home on the hill or a cave? The logic was just terrible the beginning of the movie and up until everyone turns into vampires, except for the main characters was great because it was brutal And after one mistake you’re gone, but then all of a sudden there’s two people left and they’re able to kill a whole town full of vampires ,yeah right. I don’t know who’s writing the script but yeah, this shit sucked. See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson May 3 It’s a decent enough adaptation that I have fun with but there is a low quality feeling that I can’t quite put my finger on. The acting is very wooden across the entire cast making exposition seem unnatural & forced. The pacing is bad as it moves too quickly for the characters or plot to be earned or properly developed. The overall tone is great & does justice to King’s book as his vision is clearly present. There are some really cool moments with interesting shots & impactful kills that showcase vampires as terrifying creatures, even if it’s all underwhelming. See more Emily A @RT48290692 Apr 21 I hate to be that person, but having come from just reading the book, I think it would have been better if I never watched this garbage fire. Even if it wasn't based off of the book, there was nothing good about the movie. It jumped around and rushed the story leaving the whole thing disjointed and hard to follow. And no, the kid was not the hero of the story like the movie made him out to be. Garbage acting. Garbage story. I dont think there is a single redeeming quality about this. See more Andrew S @Andrewfev Apr 9 This adaptation fails to build tension or any real stakes. It feels rushed, with no real character development. Ben and Susan’s romance happens too fast with zero depth. The kid and other characters are just plot pieces—you don’t care when vampires take over. The outbreak spreads quickly with abrupt scenes and no slow dread or paranoia. Even creepy moments fall flat. The drive-in climax and final fights feel generic. It could have been better but fails to live up to the 1979 miniseries. See more Read all reviews
