Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan share phenomenal chemistry as the film's two leads for the film's profound, heartbreaking, and ever important takeaway on perhaps sex addiction's biggest victim: family. Portraying brother and sister, I have perhaps never seen two characters demonstrate this so clearly and so profoundly in a motion picture. Production values are incredible, though the film's pacing does start off pretty uneven in the first half, and I did find a few moments that I was asking why this scene or that scene was of any ultimate importance. And that did drag the film down a bit for me at first, but more than makes up by it all building up to a sensational, unforgettable climax in the second half that delivers on its premise. Shame is a fantastic, gritty, and very realistic expectation of the very real dangers of pervasive sex addiction that every legal adult (this IS an NC-17 film for a reason) should watch at least once.
