Jithin K @Jithin 02/21/2025 The grimness of some of these 70s films is quite different from that of modern ones. A lot of the 70s films that are a bit dark in nature make me empathize more with anyone who we don't see in the movie because we are horrified for them to be living along with these kinds of people rather than feeling anything for anyone in the film itself. That's not a bad thing per se, but a lot of times it tends to be boring. Here, they make it interesting more with the way this film is shot. The cinematography and editing really carry this movie. The tension of the jailbreak scene, in the beginning, was so well done with such minimal dialogues and full use of the props they had. Even though the story is lackluster and the antihero portrayal is dated, the craft in the filmmaking itself really makes this worthwhile. Ian McShane in the supporting role as a jolly conniving crook was pretty great and fits more into what psychopaths are according to modern studies rather than the gloomy depressed silent types the movies sell us. See more 01/07/2013 Kudos for the Warner Archive label from The States for having the conviction of fishing out obscure and lesser known movies for a wider reissue as this tough and well acted thriller from 1972 proves. Oliver Reed plays Harry Lomart a dangerous armed robber who plans to break out of prison and kill his wife after he discovers she is seeing another man. After a spell in solitary Lomart escapes with his fellow inmate Birdy played by IanMcShane buys a deadly Masur rifle and begins to hunt down his wife played by Jill St John while trying to saty one step ahead of Edward Woodwards dooged police Inspector. The fact that this film is obscure should not detract from the fact that its excellent in every way as Reed proves that he was capable of greatness despite all the headlines and hell raising,his performance is the centarl prop of the film and its one of his best. McShane makes a great foil to Reeeds brawn and Jill St John plays the straying wife to perfection. Director Douglas Hickox would go on the direct the Wonderful Theatre of Blood makes good use of the crumbling 70S London locale and the final twist and denoument is very much in the Get Cater mould . See more 04/24/2010 A violent crime thriller. Oliver Reed stars in this little known flick but one of his best movie roles. Fuelled with revenge, he breaks out of prison to go after his wife (played by Jill St John) who wants to divorce him carrying another man's child. An all-star cast alongside Oliver Reed include Ian McShane, Edward Woodward and Frank Finlay, a very enjoyable movie that joins the 70's violent British film category which includes Get Carter, Villain and A Clockwork Orange.
