Critics Consensus

Man of Steel's exhilarating action and spectacle can't fully overcome its detours into generic blockbuster territory.

Snyder is an adrenaline junkie forever jonesing for a fix; he does less building to the action beats than backing each one into the next. Go to Full Review

Clark's multiple father-and-son tales are beautifully realized and it's a very fun movie to watch. However, the romance is shallow. Go to Full Review

A gritty, realistic story shot by a director whose instincts constantly push him away from grit and realism, and into flash and fantasy. Go to Full Review

The film’s first half feels like a highlight reel of set pieces from Clark’s youth...and the second...is a relentless barrage of...oversized action that doesn’t even look good, with about 20 minutes of plot stuck in the middle. Go to Full Review

Snyder takes care to preserve the core of nobility, humility and goodness that have made Superman so beloved all over the world for three quarters of a century (and counting), making for a film that's exhilarating, emotional, and even beautiful. Go to Full Review

mah4283 12/09/2024 the movie was great but I hate the subtitle machine we need the glasses back not that cup holder thing See more Joseph Tutorials T @OSCGJoseph 1h 86% I would say Henry cavil gives the best performance in the third act ill say that I didn't find this superman all that great there's a lot of lives gone and the pacing is off I really did love Zod and Clark Kent as a kid i didn't like or when his dad sacrifices himself Overall good film but has some issues See more A J @RT30824839 1d This is one of a handful of films I can watch and have watched a few times since its release. Favourite genre being sci-fi I grew up with actor CR as the on screen Superman character and just as I enjoy and have rewatched Batman with MK and with BA, I have to admit HC holds his own…weight…Andrew …sorry just reverberating a moment of recall from watching Bicentennial Man recently…I digress …yeah, HC who I briefly recall in the Tudors tv show, has shown his convincing character role abilities on other on screen projects, I think imo, does, justice to the role of Superman in this and the follow on films - all with an excellent cast ensemble - ZS really brings sci-fi genre storylines to the big screen in a spectacular and convincing way. I admit that I enjoyed the reboot of Superman with DC that included NF, NH, AT voice et al., as JG brought a lighter element and again reminiscent of CR series from my younger years. Though not a comic fan, I have come to like this series most on screen See more Jaoo G @Jaoogigliotti 2d The best superman EVER! See more Koen M @Koen.machiels 3d Henry Cavill is hands down the best superman, the ffirst flight scene awesome, this movie is cringe at some points but i still love it See more Bret M. @BretM-3 Mar 20 Man of Steel was way better than I remember. I remembered Henry Cavill was good, but I didn't remember he was THIS good. Henry is a very good fit for Superman, and I wish I could say he was a really good Clark Kent, but I feel we don't see enough of him as Clark for me to properly appreciate his portrayal of Clark. I don't love the flashbacks intercut with the present day stuff, but it's done in a pretty satisfying way. Another standout of this movie is Zod. He's a very interesting villain that is so good because his cause is somewhat noble, but it's his methods that are corrupt. Unfortunately, I feel Amy Adams delivers a boring and forgettable portrayal of Lois Lane. She plays the damsel in distress/ Superman love interest well but I feel we don't get to see the real witty reporter side that really characterizes Lois. But that's a very minor complaint. The big complaint I have is how dark this movie is. Other than that, it’s really good! See more Read all reviews
