Critics Consensus

Wan and lugubrious, The Captive represents another atmospheric, beautifully filmed misfire from director Atom Egoyan.

Egoyan skilfully brings these story-lines together as the film builds to its disconcerting conclusion. Go to Full Review

For all its problems, The Captive does try to hit the themes that have obsessed Egoyan for three decades: desire, death, memory, and time. Go to Full Review
Robert Abele Los Angeles Times 12/18/2014
Becomes baroque and ludicrous as the Hitchcockian scenario loses its psychological bearings in a web of trashy plot twists and self-conscious jumps in time. Go to Full Review

Despite significant resources and a well-known cast, this accumulation of perversions, script whims, and ridiculous situations result in a monstrosity: cold, artificial, clumsy, manipulative, and, ultimately, hollow and banal. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

An interesting enough premise, but in an effort to differentiate itself from a score of similarly themed police procedurals, it makes a few wrong turns. Go to Full Review

Hannah D. @RT47229721 3d (ENDING SPOILERS KINDA , DONT READ IF U HAVENT WATCHED LOL ‼️🚨 I didn’t really understand all the time jumps in this movie and the ending left me wondering, did the guy die while in the hospital? Where was her little skating friend why she just skate off at the end smiling like that I wanted to see them reunite See more jules V @RT05488906 4d I had SUCH high hopes. It had all the makings of a fantastic movie. But they just let plot points and timelines just melt into one big, disappointing mess. They never explained the 2nd or 3rd level of this amazing ring with super encryption. Let alone who was in it and why they used this girl to promote it. Why he made her narrate her experiences and why it had such a value. Its almost like I watched 2 separate movies simultaneously. Why was he making her read Mozart? Where was the motive? Why were they following her? Shame. I was super excited the 1st half. Now I just want those 2 hours back.... See more Richard H @RT55496676 Mar 20 Once again I feel like most of the other raters here -- including the so-called experts -- either watched a different movie or are from a different planet. First, as to all the complaints about time-jumping, I had zero trouble following the shifts. Moreover, I thought it was a really effective way to maintain the tension. I found the ending clever, and then devastating ... I don't want to spoil it but it was anything but run-of-the mill thriller resolution. That plus the subject matter adds up to a powerful experience. If you find this movie slow and boring, it might just be because you are the slow one. See more Josh W @Wilspup75 Mar 18 This movie had such an opportunity to be good, but it jumps timelines without anyonbe looking different, so you spend half the time just trying to figure out which timeline you're in. Heck, a person is kidnapped mid-movie and by the end of the movie, I had forgotten they were even missing because they hadn't even thouched on them missing and that person kept showing up later on because we were set in an earlier time frame. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Mar 16 The Captive starring Ryan Reynolds is a gripping thriller about a father whose daughter is abducted and the long, painful search to find her years later. The story focuses on the emotional weight of a parent who refuses to give up, even as suspicion and accusations begin to surround him. The screenplay builds tension well and creates moments that genuinely pull the audience into the mystery. However, the film is not perfect. Some scenes slow the pacing and feel unnecessary, which causes the story to drag at times. Rosario Dawson gives a solid performance early in the film, but her presence fades in the third act, which feels like a missed opportunity. Despite its flaws, the casting works well and Reynolds carries the film with a strong, emotional performance. Overall, it’s a decent thriller that keeps your attention even if it doesn’t fully reach its potential. See more Matthew P. @Filmcritic123 Mar 16 The only thing good about this movie is the idea of it. The dialogue and acting is bad. The cop characters are cringy and cliche. The switching of times lines is confusing and it just doesn’t hit. Thrillers aren’t supposed to be this boring. See more Read all reviews
