Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that's only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world's deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family -- while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime -- Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity

Critics Consensus

Heavy on rote action and light on laughs, The Family Plan aimlessly imitates an array of films that tell similar stories -- and often in more compelling fashion.

A comic thriller that isn’t especially funny or particularly exciting, The Family Plan is an overlong slog that struggles to make use of its game cast. Go to Full Review

The premise for this action comedy is solid... yes. Even intriguing. The execution, however, is slipshod, bland and at times downright distracted. Go to Full Review

A movie that entertains throughout and –never better said– couldn’t be a better family plan. Although it’s not particularly memorable. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

In The Family Plan, a lot of opportunities are surrendered in favour of dull characters, and an even duller plot. Go to Full Review

This family-oriented comedy-adventure is best when the humor balances the action, but when it descends into more graphic violence, it loses what makes it original and limits its age appeal. Go to Full Review

Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 15 The Family Plan has a solid idea at its core, but it never quite becomes the kind of action-comedy it wants to be. It moves along fast enough, yet a lot of the humor and energy feel too familiar. Mark Wahlberg gives the movie some charm, and the family dynamic helps keep things watchable. Even so, the story does not take enough risks, and many scenes feel like they are playing it safe. What makes it most frustrating is that there is a better movie hiding in here somewhere. The premise could easily support a sharper, funnier, and more exciting sequel if the writing were stronger and the action had more personality. As it stands, The Family Plan is an okay one-time watch, but not much more than that. It has enough going for it to be mildly entertaining, but it really needs a better sequel to fully deliver on its potential. 4/10 See more Eugene C @RT18493312 May 4 A total blast from start to finish! Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan have great chemistry, and the 'dad-joke' humor mixed with high-stakes action was surprisingly fresh. It’s exactly what it promises: a fun, breezy action comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. The baby is hilarious, and the soundtrack is a 10/10. Perfect for a family movie night when you just want to turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. See more Thyaagu C @Thyaagu Apr 28 Basic story, flawless execution. Clichés and saturated themes?
