Not quite credible enough to stand up as a gritty, 70s-esque social drama, and lacking the focus of the Training Day-style urban thriller it's marketed as, Michele Civetta's second feature is an awkward but passably entertaining blend of both.

It's better to rip the Band-Aid off right away: A lot doesn't work with this movie. It's described as a crime thriller, but it lacks on the thrilling part. The story is pretty simple and doesn't do a whole lot to hook viewers in.

The Gateway is such a generic and unimaginative rehash of many other crime dramas, it's likely to be soon forgotten after people see it. It's yet another story about a hero who has an 'against all odds' struggle against gangster thugs.

I live in St. Louis. My main complaint is that this film is supposed to be set in St. Louis, and while I did not know this going in, I knew this was not shot in St. Louis, Right away. It really did not look like St. Louis, at all. The buildings, the streets, the casinos, the police cars, even the sunlight did not look like St. Louis. Beyond that I enjoyed it. Shea Wigham was good, Bruce Dern was great. Olivia Munn was good, as was the girl who played her daughter. Grillo always plays a good pompous ahole. The bad guys were a little suspect. St. Louis does not have much of a Mexican/Cartel criminal element. Overall I did like the movie and SPOILER it does have a downer ending. I feel like these types of movies, small independent movies, are rarely at the theaters anymore, so I was happy to see it on the big screen.

Good movie with good acting. Storyline a little boring at times and it didn’t even come close to looking like St. Louis where the movie was supposed to be set. We haven’t had electric street cars since 1966 except the new Delmar area train and that train just started running off and on. But it was still entertaining.
