Critics Consensus

Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Audience Says

The Gorge is a narratively uneven but conceptually strong sci-fi entry that benefits greatly from the chemistry between Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller.

Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. Go to Full Review

It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. Go to Full Review

The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Go to Full Review

The Gorge is proof that even with a talented cast and a massive budget, you can still dig yourself into a hole. Or, perhaps, a gorge. Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson has crafted in The Gorge what feels like an adaptation of a video game that doesn’t exist, one that shines especially in its first half and in its impossible love story, brought to life by a dream team of actors. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson elevates The Gorge through its artful visuals and a thrilling techno-heavy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, even if its storytelling frequently stumbles throughout its 128-minute runtime. Go to Full Review

Guapo E @Xavier124 2d Romance was nice ig but everything was pretty horrible and there are a billion plot holes. 1. If this Gorge is the most dangerous place and so mysterious why is there only TWO people guarding it??? You'd think that if it was so important to keep the monsters inside the Gorge they wouldn't only have two people guarding it right? 2. We find out that the Gorge was created by a cold war bio-weapon releases on accident or something, but earlier they stated AND saw an army of 1800s style men on horses attacking with swords. For this to happen they would've needed to send down the calverly after the biochemical was leaked and using horses for war was phased out in the 1920s. There's probably a lot more I missed but yeah. The only redeeming quality about this movie is the cast and the romance. So overall good concept but very poorly executed and super overused and cheesy plot points. Don't recommend I audibly laughed at some parts of this movie. Please don't watch this, for your sanity See more Dockside T @Captain_Jaxon 2d I'm surprised the ratings are so mid for this movie. Good pacing, good chemistry between the leads, and decent action. The movie doesn't over-explain its lore and instead has things unfold naturally. It should get points for that alone. I also loved the nod to Teller's "Whiplash" and Taylor-Joy's "Queen's Gambit" roles even though I read that was more of a coincidence. This is a direct-to-streaming movie that I would've happily seen in theaters. If you're looking for an easy to watch action/thriller, this will scratch that itch. See more Carl M @RT70491942 May 17 I find Ana Taylor-Joy mesmerizing.. where has she been.. Miles Teller is a GREAT young actor... and we need A LOT more of them.. hope they BOTH stay out of politicking, stick to acting ! What can you say about Sigourney Weaver.. small role, but she's always a pro... not PEEP ONE from her in political realm.. If you take the movie for what it is, it's a hoot, I would have enjoyed it MORE on the BIG SCREEN. At first the "monsters" were disappointing, but nothing else would have worked. Need more of these movies.. movies that keep your attention to the end.... If I watch a movie more than once, it's pretty great.. Watched "The Gorge" bout 5 times .. Well done ! See more Pascal G @DonPascal May 16 All the ingredients for a top movie. Original romance, scenario, great action, design… See more Spencer R @RT17810894 May 16 While visually stunning, the story is just to shallow. It could have been more especially with a good cast. Can skip. See more Edward H @TinTan May 12 An intriguing premise, but the increasingly ridiculous superhuman feats of two very human protagonists fighting the monsters become wearing and ridiculous. Too bad, was enjoying up that point. See more Read all reviews
