In what was once North America, the Capitol of Panem maintains its hold on its 12 districts by forcing them each to select a boy and a girl, called Tributes, to compete in a nationally televised event called the Hunger Games. Every citizen must watch as the youths fight to the death until only one remains. Welp rotten tomatoes you’ve got this one right. This was a great debut movie for the hunger games series. It really introduces such a scary dystopian power structure in civilization. And that set the perfect scene for an icon of Hope. Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in her role. She played both soft spoken and mysterious yet was powerful in her moments of action. It really creates such an interesting depiction of an alternate universe civilization. It’s also scary how the problems they have also seem similar to our society in some ways. Think black mirror, but less technological. Anyways, good fricking movie.

I haven’t read the books, so I can only go off how I think these movies work as… movies. I think this is just a great introduction into this world, with some great world building and character work. Jennifer Lawrence is immediately captivating, and this movie just does such a great job at translating the themes of this series, and how raw and brutal violence can be.
