What to Know

Critics Consensus

Leveraging Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's classic chemistry to texturize a friendship tested by greed, The Rip tears into its potboiler setup with compulsively watchable confidence.

The Rip seems highly possible until its overblown climatic end, but even when it succumbs to the action thriller norms, it and the cast always keeps you thoroughly entertained. Go to Full Review

Joe Carnahan's crime thriller feels like a nice throwback to '90s genre pictures, but it pulls a few too many punches. Go to Full Review

I was entertained, even if for the longest stretches I couldn’t have told you who was doing what to whom. Chalk it up as yet another twist in the tale of Matt ‘n’ Ben – two Yin/Yang talents who will be yoked together for eternity. Go to Full Review

This movie has a lot of problems...particularly with how slow it is. You get some decent performances from Damon and Affleck but most of the scenes felt empty. Go to Full Review

With a cast of this caliber, this should have been a stronger film. It felt dumbed down and like they held their punches. Go to Full Review

Maybe if Carnahan took advantage of the Damon-Affleck chemistry, injecting some comic relief, the film would be more entertaining. He doesn't. Go to Full Review

Fahim Z @fhmzhr 4d The Rip is a tightly wound narrative that grips you from the start and refuses to let go. Its strength lies in its ability to build suspense through character-driven choices rather than relying solely on plot convenience. The Highlights: The Tension: The film does an excellent job of maintaining a high level of anxiety throughout, utilizing tight framing and a pulsing score. The Characters: The protagonist is deeply compelling, making the stakes feel personal and immediate rather than detached. The Direction: The filmmaker understands exactly how to pace a scene, knowing when to let the silence sit and when to ramp up the intensity. The Verdict: It is a highly effective, immersive thriller that delivers on its promises. While it may not reinvent the genre, it polishes the formula to a high sheen, resulting in a satisfying and memorable viewing experience. See more Jace E @thefilmguy 5d I watched this movie a month ago. When I went to write the review I realized that I never finished it. I went back and watched the final 25 minutes and (unsurprisingly) it ended exactly as I expected it to. "The Rip" isn't a bad film, but it's not that good either. The plot tries to jerk you around, the dialogue is painfully bad at moments and the twists aren't surprising at all. I like watching Damon and Affleck together and I'm a sucker for films that (mostly) take place in one location, but it's just a fine Netflix movie. See more CJ G. @CJGeoffroy 6d The entire time I was watching The Rip, I couldn’t help but think to myself “what would’ve it been like had Ben Affleck directed it?” After all, he is the director of classics such as The Town, Argo and Gone Baby Gone. Sadly, we’ll never know. The Rip is entertaining enough, and houses some strong performances, but it reminds me of hundreds of other action movies that I’ve seen. I didn’t really care about the plot twist, the characters didn’t do much for me, however, some of the action sequences were really strong. With events taking place over the course of a night, The Rip, follows a team of Miami-Dade Tactical Narcotics officers who discover a Rip of $20 million in cartel money. Good cops, crooked cops, plot twists…I’m not really sure why this based on a true story film didn’t hit the mark. It had all the elements working in its favor, but couldn’t deliver. There are worse ways to spend your time, I’d watch this one when you’re through binging whatever it is you’re binging.
