In ancient times, the gods of Asgard fought and won a war against an evil race known as the Dark Elves. The survivors were neutralized, and their ultimate weapon -- the Aether -- was buried in a secret location. Hundreds of years later, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether and becomes its host, forcing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to bring her to Asgard before Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) captures her and uses the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms -- including Earth.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.

Loki is the only character who makes himself new and interesting. When he is around, Thor: The Dark World becomes a different film altogether. You wish there was more of him. The rest of it is metal clanking. Go to Full Review

This feels like a really, really, expensive episode of Doctor Who. In a good way. Go to Full Review

Save for Hiddleston's too-brief supporting turn, this is mighty forgettable stuff, a by-the-numbers sequel to what was already the slightest and least entertaining of the 'Avengers' components. Go to Full Review

Thor: The Dark World is a great continuation in the Marvel Universe and it’s a better direction than Iron Man 3. Go to Full Review

The high-fantasy worldbuilding and story align with what the Norse mythological superhero's adventures should be – generic villain notwithstanding. Go to Full Review

Dives deeper into the lore and mythology of the character more than other MCU entries, but there might be a reason other entries are more surface-level adventures. Go to Full Review

Anythang S. @AnythangStudios 1d I like how it focuses more on Asgard than Earth, but its plot is mediocre and its villain is downright weak. See more Bret M. @BretM-3 1d Ahh, the first “bad” MCU movie. I hate to say it, because this will definitely be a controversial take, but I think that Thor Love and Thunder is better than this movie. Mainly because, the main complaint people have with Love and Thunder is its injection of comedy. But at least (if the joke lands) Love and Thunder can be comedic and entertaining. Dark World is so boring, it’s like the movie is encouraging me to get on my phone during it. IT’S SO BORING. Also, Love and Thunder has Gorr the God Butcher as its villain. Even though he’s not perfect, Christian Bale does a lot with the character and makes him cool. But Malekith is just boring and generic. There’s nothing memorable about him. There’s really nothing memorable about this whole movie other than the Aether setting up events to come and Loki’s death, which doesn’t even hold any weight by the end of the movie. I know the Multiverse Saga has been hit or miss and everybody praises the Infinity Saga, but this movie is worse to me. See more James S. @jsmith4415 May 12 Thor: The Dark World is a perfectly serviceable, middle-of-the-road entry in the MCU. It offers enough spectacle to keep most viewers entertained for two hours. The highlight of the film is undoubtedly the chemistry between Thor and Loki. The film’s biggest weakness is Malekith and his motivations to become a true threat to Asgard. See more Donta W. @ThePickyWatcher May 2 Great movie. The actors to me away to their world in every scene.
