At first, you think it’s just going to be a story about two young, ambitious country singers chasing stardom by meeting their idol. The duo, Leigh and Jordan, set out to meet Miss Dutch, a legendary country star whose career has been overshadowed by the tragic loss of her sister to suicide. But once the doors of Dutch’s mansion close, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary meet-and-greet. The film quickly shifts gears, unraveling hidden secrets and disturbing truths about what really happened in Dutch’s past and what she’s been doing ever since. It keeps you on your toes, mixing suspense with psychological mind games in ways you might not expect. And the twist on who actually becomes a psychopath—and the serial killer desperate for fame and fortune—will really blow your mind. I know Torn Hearts has been met with mixed reactions—some people feel like it doesn’t live up to its potential—but personally, I think it’s paced really well and offers something fresh. The cast is strong across the board, but what really seals it for me is Katey Sagal. She is absolutely phenomenal here. I’ve said it before, but she truly is one of my favorite actresses, and seeing her take on the role of a manipulative, unhinged psychopath was both chilling and exciting. She completely disappears into the character, which is very different from what I usually expect from her—and I loved it. If I had one issue, it would be the music. Since the film revolves around these two girls trying to make it as country stars, their performances should have felt more convincing. Unfortunately, the singing was shaky at times, which held me back from fully buying into their talent. It didn’t ruin the film for me, but it did make certain scenes harder to watch. Overall, though, Torn Hearts is a creative, dark little thriller that I think is definitely worth watching. It’s not perfect, but it’s entertaining, unique, and a showcase for Katey Sagal’s incredible talent. If you like psychological tension mixed with a bit of southern gothic flair, this is one to check out. See more Jeff M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/17/2024 I was hoping for some trashy fun with this one, but I ended up bored silly. I couldn't grasp whether the filmmakers were trying to make a true horror film or a satire. Unfortunately, it jumps back and forth between both, never quite finding success on either side of the fence. And I was a bit surprised that the whole enterprise had a cheap quality to it - particularly with anything involving the younger Dutchess Sisters. The performances are also a mixed bag. Sagal is playing to the rafters in true satire mode; whereas Quinn, who is a fascinating mixture of Rachel Dratch and Sara Gilbert, seems to be playing it straight. Of the three leads, Lemire probably does the best job of bridging the two gaps. But I suppose the biggest sin of all is that it isn't scary in the slightest. In fact, I'd say it works better as a serio-comic look at the price people are willing to pay for fame than anything resembling a horror movie - psychological or otherwise. The movie itself was a bit weak (or maybe it was the bubblegum mediocre sound of Torn Hearts), but Katey brought the darkness and suspense that this movie needed.
