Critics Consensus

A funny, tender, and thought-provoking film, The Truman Show is all the more noteworthy for its remarkably prescient vision of runaway celebrity culture and a nation with an insatiable thirst for the private details of ordinary lives.

There are no surprises in The Truman Show, except that Weir and Carrey manage to keep the picture on course. Go to Full Review

This is acting that isn't, but Carrey doesn't let the two-way mirror throw him; his unreality becomes his only real truth. Go to Full Review

It is really about freedom... and it is to our own enslavement that this powerful, brilliant, and profound film speaks. Go to Full Review

Thinking about The Truman Show in 2023, it’s clear the film—marvellously written by Andrew Niccol—was ahead of its time in some respects and doomed to be quickly dated in others. Go to Full Review

Anderson A @Anderson47474 3d Jim Carrey nesses papéis dramáticos sempre vai muito bem, o criador do programa toda vez que aparece tem um impacto absurdo no filme, um dos melhores roteiros originais 8.1 See more Romas M @Romas Jan 17 Greetings from Lithuania. "The Truman Show" (1999) is the film that i never tired to rewatch once in a year or so. It's a great movie. The plot is very unique and brilliant, as well great screenplay. Acting by everyone involved was fantastic, with Ed Harris stealing the show but the entire cast is absolutely excellent. Music is great as well directing. For the entire 2 hours i'm usually am complete absorbed no matter how many times i've seen this film. And the overall theme of "The Truman Show" is a multilayered one - one must overcome his fear to step forward in life, this is a lesson to everyone. Overall, "The Truman Show" is a great movie. I've been watching this film since 1999 and i will be rewatching it hopefully for years to come. But in case i don't see you - good afternoon, good evening and good night! See more Samuel H. @Samuelhaubner Jan 16 The movie is great. Jim Carey did an amazing job. But thinking about the film scares me. Like what if I was Truman and a show was controlling my life. The film scared me more than most horror films! See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson Jan 10 Such an excellent & intriguing concept that is full of an infectious spirit of life. Carrey’s beloved performance carries frustration, confusion, & paranoia but is layered with a magnetic pull to sympathize with & root for his character. The pacing & exposition come in surprising ways to help push the plot & conflicts forward. Some laugh out loud moments but mostly a unique look on life with all the fears & mysteries it brings. A few missed opportunities to do something truly bold & special but that doesn’t undercut what works so well with this. See more Aiden A @Aiden19 Jan 10 Really interesting a must see See more Andy D. @ajdunnam Jan 9 This movie holds up very well and is a fantastic performance by Jim Carrey. See more Read all reviews
