Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera. Go to Full Review

Substitute a giant metal robot spaceship entity for an ugly alien on the hunt and swap out Schwarzenegger for Reacher and you get the idea. While it certainly bloody enough to not just be another PG-13 FX spectacle it is still about as generic. Go to Full Review

If you haven’t guessed, it is spectacularly okay, which is why it has somehow become a massive hit for Netflix. Americans agree on nothing outside of a willingness to watch mindless mediocrity. Go to Full Review

Ken D @mynameisken 7h Gross yuck. Just another corny as* US army shi* gimme a *ucking break will ya..? We want to see absolutely nothing I mean, nothing about the US for a very long time. At least a decade would be good. Thanks. See more Jonathan G @RT18184429 8h War Machine is the high octane surprise we need more of on Netflix. It is a rare military sci-fi that brings real grit, offering a non stop, explosive ride with zero slow sequences. Unlike many streaming originals that sag in the middle, this movie maintains a steady escalation of tension and firepower. Alan Ritchson brings a grounded intensity to his role, making you care about the soldier behind the rifle as he adapts to an impossible war. His journey through the grueling Ranger Assessment and Selection Program provides a human anchor to the chaos. When the simulation turns into a lethal reality against an extraterrestrial threat, the stakes feel personal. The fight sequences are top tier. Seeing monsters from other galaxies go head to head with modern ballistics provided all the creature feature chaos I was hoping for. It is a must watch for anyone who loves a side of sci-fi with their military action. It is fun, loud, and leaves you craving a sequel. Hit play on this one tonight! See more mynameisMudd78 T @MuddyPopcorn 9h This movie lost me in the first half hour. An elite squad of soldiers, Rangers, tries to blow up an alien spacecraft. These craft is undamaged and starts to transform with red lights glowing .it is obviously going to retaliate. Instead of the soldiers taking cover, or even raising their weapons after attacking this ship, they all just stand around with their mouths open as this machine takes a defensive posture and begins firing on them. Then, it throws a grenade, which even an alien grenade still looks like a grenade, And they all stand around looking at it until it blows up. Whoever wrote this has zero military experience And probably made his living writing soap operas. A good cast and cool plot RUINED by bad writing. This is how a war movie would look if a gay liberal femal tried to write one. Just bad. See more Sandy R. @movieguy1352 10h This movie was a lot of fun a lot of explosions monsters from other galaxies. It had everything I really enjoyed it. It was perhaps not an academy award winner, but just a lot of fun to watch. See more Brian A @Blownufo 16h I thought it was a decent war/science fiction based movie. The military aspect was really good. Hopefully they will make a second part to this movie to show the war and how these aliens are See more Liam C @RT07741444 1d Solid action movie. It's not groundbreaking or realistic - it's just a movie to watch some good action and not have to think too hard (which is what you need sometimes). Perfectly good watch See more Read all reviews
