I only watched because Iris is in it (love her) and was completely unprepared for how much this movie would wreck me. I was full-on sobbing. See more Birithivy Y @RT04210749 01/26/2025 Young Werther - 6.5/10. Didn’t know that this movie is based on a classic novel (from the 1700’s!), but this Canadian film was surprisingly good! I love when films are shot in Toronto, or, set in Toronto. I felt like this was one of the better Toronto film, showcasing the beauty and brightness of the city. As for the actual film it self, I feel like I really enjoyed the first half, and then didn’t love the second half. Its actually nice that they showed the downside and sad nature one side love could have, as it could quickly go from being just puppy love that seems innocent to becoming a stalker like presence. Werther isn’t a likeable character, but, Douglas Booth does a good job of making this gradually unlikeable character to being watchable. Alison Pill is the true star here though! She’s so good, and I’m surprised she doesn’t get as many romcom or romantic roles in general. Her chemistry with Douglas is what makes this movie good to begin with. Patrick Adams is decent here too, but I really hope he doesn’t end up just playing lawyers for the rest of his career. Also liked the quirky “Wes Anderson Canadianian” vibe of the film. Characters are talking fast at points like a Sorkin film, and the visuals, clothing, and rooms reminded me of Anderson a bit. And for an “R rated” film, this was super tame! Though I didn’t love the second half, for a Canadian film, this was good work! A lot hinges on whether or not you like Douglas Booth's Werther, who's fantastic at capturing both the emotional highs & lows. But it's a sleek, fun film nonetheless.
