Working New Year's Eve at a hotel in Hollywood, Calif., the new bellhop, Ted (Tim Roth), has no idea what's in store for him. Left alone to tend to the guests, Ted soon finds himself in completely over his head. Between a domestic dispute and a demented entourage, spell-casting witches and destructive children, Ted has little hope of making it through the night in one piece. As he tries to maintain order and save his own life, the unlucky bellhop encounters one deranged guest after another.

On the one hand, TIm Roth gives the bellhop an almost Charlie Chaplin silent film feel. The impish looks, the exaggerated shock takes, the way he bounces in place or struts behind his room service cart. On the other hand, he has lines. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Tim Roth anchors the film as the hapless bellhop Ted, navigating four wildly bizarre stories over a single New Year’s Eve in a Los Angeles hotel: a Halloween-themed party gone wrong, a mobster’s mysterious demands, a devilish lovers’ quarrel, and a surreal finale involving a wedding. Roth’s performance can be cringe-inducing at times — his wimpy, over-the-top portrayal occasionally grates — yet his character is the perfect through-line connecting these absurd vignettes. The all-star ensemble cast and offbeat, unpredictable stories make the film oddly memorable, earning it a place on the top shelf of cult cinema. Despite its critical “flop” label, Four Rooms is anything but forgettable: a bizarre, funny, and strangely charming anthology that refuses to gather much dust.
