Claudio C @Claudio666 Nov 26 Goodbye Solo (2008) Good, but Overrated (12,088– 26 Nov 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In North Caroline, the Senegalese taxi driver Solo (Souléymane Sy Savané) is a communicative and happy man that lives with the Latin Quiera (Carmen Leyva) and her daughter Alex (Diana Franco Galindo). When he meets the old man William (Red West) in his cab, he hires Alex to drive him to Blowing Rock, a place where there are strong winds, two weeks later on the 20th. Solo finds the request strange since the man does not schedule return and has just sold his apartment. The man asks to go to a motel, but drinks with Solo first and they go to his home. On the next morning, William learns that Solo is studying to be flight attendant against the will of Quiera. Along the days, Solo befriends William and tries to understand his motive for suicide. "Goodbye Solo" (2008) is a good but overrated American drama by Ramin Bahrani. Very well acted, the plot keeps the mystery about the reasons why William wants to commit suicide. His notebook snooped by Solo gives a subtle explanation os William’s motive and the conclusion is open, ambiguous and not clear whether William ended his life. My vote is six. There are unanswered questions by the end but there's some substance to it too. Not a bad watch. I think it was the subtlety of the ending that managed to move me. The taxi driver character, Solo, is very talkative, if anything in an over the top way, which may bother some but its this contrast with him talking quite urban talk, quite informally, while the other character, William, is clearly in a bit of personal bother, being quite serious and in a low state of mind, not wanting to reveal too much about his life. See more 12/24/2015 Goodbye Solo was perplexing, like I can't decide whether I really liked it or not. The film is extremely simplistic in its approach, and is very simply shot. The characters are very believable, usually spouting unremarkable dialogue that emulates the conversation between two people. Savane and West do a good job of sticking to the plan. The film moves slowly, but the last quarter is pretty wrenching, and that's what Goodbye Solo is going for. See more Read all reviews
