But in this case, go read the 2007 authorized biography by the same name instead. It’s not the film was bad. Or that Chevy’s career is not worthy. It’s that the filmmakers dropped the ball. Chevy Chase is one of the greats. However the film was created (written?) by people who seemed to be trying to ruin Chase’s reputation. He’s a complicated person. True. Chevy mentions that in the very beginning. However they seem to be trying to sensationalize Chevy’s worst characteristics. The interviews with Chevy are hard to watch. One negative question after another. They put him on the defensive at every turn. It’s surprising that Chase let the documentary get produced (assuming he had any say). Highlights included Chase’s early life and career and interviews with all the actors who loved working with him and who were in awe of his talent. A-plus for Chevy. F for the writers and horrible interviewer. Alas, there’s just a very tiny bit of hyperbole and saccharine to not hit four stars. I was most curious about his demons - less about his career arc - so that’s my bias. Still a good watch. Is that good, bad or indifferent?". I'm kind of in the second category. I guess... I did love him once upon a time in the 70s and 80s in Foul Play, Fletch, Caddyshack and the Vacation movies. But the collective weight of all these scandals over the years makes it hard to feel anything but animosity for him at this point. Small details — the production design of the home, the quiet moments between scenes, and the measured use of flashback — made the past feel lived-in rather than just explanatory. Chevy gave a restrained, honest performance that allowed us to see both vulnerability and defensiveness. Overall, I left feeling more empathetic toward Mr. Chase and more aware of how upbringing shapes behavior in complicated ways. Beyond that chatgpt pilfered write up, how can you not watch a biopic on one of the funniest guys on tv in the 70s and star of those hilarious vacation movies. You will not be disappointed.
