Kevin P @RT55971421 Jan 26 An entertaining remake of the Mel Brooks classic that closely follows the 2001 Broadway stage play adaptation. The movie has a star-studded cast. Matthew Broderick is okay as the neurotic straight man accountant, but he doesn't hold a candle to Gene Wilder's high-energy hysterical mania. Nathan Lane on the other hand, is giving it his all and easily steals the show with his high energy and commitment to the bit. Unlike the original movie, this version is a full-on musical that closely follows in the Broadway show's footsteps. The musical numbers are decently choreographed, but the songs themselves are pretty hit-or-miss and sometimes feel like they're just there to pad out the runtime. While the movie is still funny, I feel like the delivery isn't as strong as the original. I liked the actors playing the flamboyant stage directors. They gave these thankless stereotype characters a lot of personality and charm. Overall, it's a decent remake and Broadway adaptation. I was tired of seeing people reference this story without me seeing it for myself. So, now I can check it off my list. See more Daniel G. @DanielG25 Jan 24 While this movie may not be as incredible as the original production (not many movie musicals are), it does preserve many of the original performances from Broadway from legends like Nathan Lane, Mathew Broderick, Gary Beach, and Roger Bart as well as many ensemble members from the original production. Director Susan Stroman may not have reinvented the wheel with this movie, but she sure made a very entertaining watch. The production numbers are spectacular and these songs are just incredible (all written by brooks) although I do wonder what the movie would have been if Brooks directed and Stroman co-directed the picture together. I feel Brooks could have brought some of the original quick Witt from the original film that this movie lacks. But I give this 5 stars since without this movie I would never have discovered and fallen in love with Mel Brooks’ work. See more Daniel G. @TheProducer25 Aug 1 While yes, it doesn’t have the exact magic that it had on Broadway, this movie preserves these performances by Lane, Broderick, Beach, and Bart from the original production and brings in Will Farrell (who is great) and Uma Thurman (weakest of the cast by far). Of course, the original Broadway production is best, but this is a great updated outing with more modern faces. Why people drag it so hard, I'll never know.
