Paul Oakenfold and Tiësto lift DJs from bedroom record-spinners to rock star icons -- turning the "art of DJing" into legend. Outdoor raves explode in the fields of England. The British government cracks down after the week-long Castlemorton rave in 1992, pushing the scene indoors and spawning "superclubs." In the U.S., the Millennial generation wrestles with the excesses and influence of technology and social media. Kaskade, Sebastian Ingrosso and Hardwell ride the wave of riches, even as they see hints of a coming crash. Las Vegas recovers from a meltdown by lionizing DJs in clubs like Hakkasan. Wall Street swoops in to claim a trend. Festivals replace raves. A new form of "EDM" house music with 30-second "drops" takes over. Kai Song starts on his DJ journey at age 11. Then a backlash -- kids overdose on molly, a company, SFX Entertainment, goes bankrupt trying to exploit EDM and DJs "press play," threatening the loss of innocence of electronic dance music.
